Preparing For Baby Massage
- Before you start the actual massage process, you need to properly prepare yourself. In this case
- Set up the area where you intend to massage the baby. This could be either a bed or the baby’s changing table.
- Set the room to a comfortable temperature that will be fit for both the baby and anyone else who may be around.
- Ensure that you have all the necessary items that you will need during the massage within reach. These include:
- Emollient cream or baby oil
- Towels to mop up excess oil or any accidental spills
- Nappy changing kit
- Clothes to change your baby into after the massage
Massaging The Baby
Step 1- Different parts of the body will need to be massaged in different ways for it to be effective. For this reason, start the massage with the baby’s legs stroking them gently from the thigh to the soles. Unlike in adult massage, avoid pulling the baby’s toes and instead lightly massage the end of the toe in a circular motion to help stimulate nerve endings.
Step 2 – Next, move to arms and massage them in circular strokes. Move these strokes slowly from the upper arm to the lower arm, and massage the entire arm in general circular motions.
Step 3 – The chest and shoulder should be next, whereby you should make gentle strokes the inner part of the shoulder, slowly towards the outer part.
Step 4 – Massaging the face can be easier said than done, especially since most babies tend to move a lot. Try to give the massage by placing your index finger at the centre of the baby’s forehead and gently stroking the outline of his chin. You could also massage the forehead by moving your fingers towards its centre.
Step 5 – Finally, place your baby on his tummy and massage his back. Use your fingertips and make clockwise circles on his back as you move towards his buttocks.
Massaging your baby helps to stimulate digestive and circulatory systems. Other conditions that may be solved through massage are such as:
- Constipation
- Gas
- Colic
Ensure that you consult your doctor before massaging your baby in case they have any health problem.
