Wow, your baby is just a month away from celebrating his first birthday! He is getting older and even more curious. You have to be keen about what he’s doing and where he goes now. You’ve probably been called ‘mama’ several times by now. Now let’s see how your baby should be doing at 11 months
Milestones at 11 Months
- Motor Skills – Your baby should be walking around with the support of furniture or when you hold his hands. This might be the month that he tries making a few steps on his own if you’re lucky. It is exciting seeing him become more independent. His creativity is also growing. He will love playing games and climbing onto things. Your baby is now quite the explorer. Get anything that could harm out of reach to keep him safe. Give him exciting toys that increase his creativity and thought process. Toys such as nesting cups and building blocks will help.
- Feeding – Your baby should be able to self-feed by now. It means his eye-hand coordination should be completely developed. Offer him snack time in the morning and in the evening. He is very active now and needs as much energy as he can get. You will need to introduce a new food severally before he can start eating.
- Communication – Your baby has now increased his word memory and will continue to widen his speech range. He has now devised his own language. He may be speaking full sentences to you, but you may not be able to catch any of it. He can also understand a lot of words. He may even repeat the last words you say to him. In fact, he may understand words such as “no” or “stop” because of how often you say them yourself.
How You Can Help Your Baby’s Development
- Read to your baby as often as you can. It helps increase his vocabulary and encourage a love of books
- Talk to your baby in full sentences
- Use hand puppets as imaginative and creative play
- Play time should be more advanced. It should have art and crafts, different textures and materials such as sand, water, and even jelly
- Allow your baby to explore
- Praise your baby for whatever he does well
- Do not put socks on your baby around the house until he learns to work.
Please ensure that you ask as many questions as possible in regards to your baby’s development. Baby’s grow and develop at their own pace.
Signs of Delayed Development
Every child develops at a different pace. Watch out, however, should you notice any of these signs:
- Cannot stand even when supported
- Does not crawl
- Drags one side of body while crawling (lasting for over a month)
- Cannot point to objects
- Does not search for objects that are hidden while he watches
- Does not say single words like (“mama” or “dada”)
- Cannot use gestures like waving or shaking their head
