Common Changes in The Mother

At the fourth month of pregnancy, there are lots of noticeable changes happening in the mother’s body. These may include:

  • Urinary frequency and leaking due to the pressure on the bladder and urethra as the baby grows.
  • Due to the increase in blood volume in the body, veins on the legs enlarge which is called varicose veins. It tends to disappear after delivery.
  • Heartburn-it’s another common change because digestion slows down during pregnancy.
  • Increased vaginal discharge occurs in many women due to the hormonal changes in the body which is nourishing the baby.
  • Increased weight (Track your weight using our pregnancy weight tracker here)

Week 13

In this month, the size of your baby is about 4-6 inches long, the size of a large orange or an avocado.

Its head, which is about half the size of his total frame, is getting more in balance with the rest of the body.

His body is covered with fine downy hair called lanugo that will stay with him for most of the pregnancy.

Week 14

Your baby is now about 8.5cm long, about the same size as a lemon or your fist.

Your baby will start to use her facial muscles to smile and grimace. He will start to practice his/her breathing.

They will also have their first urine. As it starts to swallow little bits of amniotic fluid, they will pass into the stomach hence the kidneys will start to work and the swallowed fluid will pass back into the amniotic fluid as urine.

Week 15

Your baby now measures over 5 inches and is roughly the size of an apple. They are gaining weight and now weigh around 85 grams.

Though you may not feel it, he or she is starting to kick those tiny legs and flexing those elbows.

The bones in their ears will be developing for the first time and your baby will be able to hear the sounds of your heart, digestive system, and voice.

Week 16

At week 16, the foetus measures 4-5 inches and weighs around100 grams. It’s also the size of an avocado.

The doctor, with the help of a scan may be able to tell if your baby is a girl or a boy as the genitals are fully formed
